About the Project PPEP / PPEP Farmworker Youth
HEP Program
(High School Equivalence Program)
The
five-year Project PPEP / PPEP HEP program develops
and operates a state-wide system of instructional,
financial and social support for qualifying students
whose families are migrants and for other seasonal
farmworkers. This program was implemented in
the already established statewide Project PPEP instructional
and social support system for Arizona farmworkers.
The PPEP HEP students will complete a high school
equivalency (GED) program and obtain the necessary
academic and vocational skills to succeed in post-secondary
life and to make a successful transition from farmwork
to nonagricultural settings. Further, the project
assists the program student graduates to find jobs
or enter college or some other form of post-secondary
training.
The
PPEP HEP program is guided by a trained and qualified
central staff housed in Tucson, AZ, and has access
to all the services and resources of Project PPEP
& Affiliates. The project delivers an operational
system of instructional and counseling services to
students initially at 2 Major Sites in Yuma County
and expands services to the migrant stream communities
located in remote areas within the state. The
project addresses the academic, School-to-Work and
affective dimensions, and needs of 150 participants
in a program year through a two-part approach.
First,
the PPEP HEP program operates a management system
for internal management, coordination of activities,
and establishment of networks for cooperation among
state and local agencies and educational institutions.
Second,
the PPEP HEP program operates a student services component,
consisting of recruitment; assessment; academic instruction;
an effective and specific curriculum model; School-to-Work
skills training; counseling; affective skill building;
post-PPEP HEP placement in employment, college and
training programs; and other support services.
The
PPEP HEP program is designed to provide on-going and
cost-effective activities for a five-year period with
requested funding from the U.S Department of Education.
